Chong Wei, Lin Dan win, but three youngsters knock out stars

KUALA LUMPUR: Veterans Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia and Lin Dan of China flexed their muscles to reach the quarter-finals of the US$1.2mil South Korea Open in Seoul yesterday.
But three youngsters – Kenichi Tago of Japan and China’s Wang Zhengming and Du Pengyu – seized the limelight when they knocked out three China stars – Chen Long, reigning champion Chen Jin and Bao Chunlai respectively – in the second round.
Tago battled for one hour and 29 minutes to break the resolve of fourth-seeded Chen Long for a 20-22, 23-21, 21-16 win.
Pengyu and world junior champion Zhengming, however, did not face much resistance in their matches. Pengyu ousted Chunlai 21-16, 21-13 and Zhengming overcame Chen Jin 21-11, 21-14.
This has led to speculation that Chunlai and Chen Jin pulled their punches to allow their juniors to go through.
In today’s quarter-finals, Pengyu will face Tago while Zhengming has a tricky match against Chong Wei.
Yesterday, Chong Wei ripped South Korean Park Sung-hwan apart for a 21-14, 21-9 win in just 35 minutes.
National coach Teh Seu Bock was happy with the transformation in Chong Wei’s game.
Just a day earlier, the Malaysian was slow off the mark before finally prevailing against Denmark’s Jan O Jorgensen.
“I am happy with his condition here. He is a bit tired as he is coming into his third tournament this month. But I am happy that he is able to showcase the qualities in his game,” said Seu Bock.
The coach, however, was sceptical with the outcome of match between Zhengming and Chen Jin, saying: “I think Chen Jin is not prepared to face Chong Wei yet.”
The other quarter-final matches today will see Lin Dan facing Indonesian Taufik Hidayat and Denmark’s Peter-Gade Christensen is up against a resurgent Simon Santoso of Indonesia.
So far, Lin Dan has not shown any signs of the back injury that resulted in him conceding a walkover in the quarter-finals of the Malaysia Open last week.
Yesterday, he took only 27 minutes to record a 21-9, 21-12 win over Marc Zwiebler of Germany.
Meanwhile, it was all over for Malaysia’s Wong Mew Choo when she ran out of steam against top seed Wang Xin, losing 16-21, 9-21 in the women’s singles second round.

Sweet revenge for Kien Keat-Boon Heong

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian doubles pairs Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong and Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari-Ong Soon Hock scored significant wins on a day when world champions Cai Yun Fu Haifeng of China were knocked out of the US$1.2mil South Korea Open in Seoul yesterday.
Kien Keat-Boon Heong and Fairuzizuan-Soon Hock won their second round matches against China’s Hong Wei-Shen Ye and Indonesians Alven Yulianto-Hendra Gunawan respectively to assure Malaysia of a semi-final ticket.
The Malaysians will be up against each other in today’s quarter-finals.
On top: Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari-Ong Soon Hock(back) convincingly beat the eight seeds Alven Yulianto-Hendra Gunawan 21-18, 21-12 in the South Korea Open in Seoul yesterday.
But, more importantly, Kien Keat-Boon Heong’s hard-fought 25-23, 11-21, 21-19 win over the gutsy Chinese youngsters in 55 minutes was sweet revenge.
Kien Keat-Boon Heong had lost to the Chinese pair in the opening round of the Malaysia Open last week and were blasted for their arrogance on the court.
Despite redeeming their battered pride yesterday, national doubles coach Rexy Mainaky was far from pleased.
“They are still missing one element in their game. They are still not enjoying their game to the fullest,” said Rexy via a telephone interview.
“They gave the Chinese pair a lot of room to dictate the pace.”
Indeed, the win certainly did not come easy for the Malaysians as they were under intense pressure – especially towards the end of the rubber game.
They were leading 19-17 but the Chinese fought bravely before going down 19-21.
“Anyway, it is good that we also have Fairuzizuan-Soon Hock in the quarter-finals. Unfortunately, they will be up against each other,” said Rexy.
For Fairuzizuan-Soon Hock, their convincing 21-18, 21-12 win over eighth seeds Alven Yulianto-Hendra Gunawan was a breakthrough.
It marked their first win over a seeded pair since teaming up last year and only their second quarter-final appearance in the Super Series after crashing out in the last eight of the France Open last year.
Fairuzizuan said: “It feels good to come this far. Soon Hock and I performed well to beat a seeded pair for the first time.”
Soon Hock added: “This breakthrough win will give us more confidence when we face our team-mates next.”
There were two major upsets yesterday, with Cai Yun-Haifeng and former world champions Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan of Indonesia being shown the exit.
Cai Yun-Haifeng could not stop the gallant run of Denmark’s on-form Mads Conrad-Petersen-Jonas Rasmussen and went down 18-21, 21-17, 13-21 while Markis-Hendra lost 18-21, 18-21 to South Korean newcomers Kim Ki-jung-Kim Sa-rang.

Misbun keeps BAM guessing

NATIONAL singles coach Misbun Sidek has not only kept BA of Malaysia (BAM) president Datuk Seri Nadzmi Salleh waiting but also postponed a meeting with high performance director Datuk James Selvaraj two days ago. Nadzmi received the mandate from the BAM council on Sunday to settle Misbun's resignation but there has been no discussion yet.

Nadzmi is believed to have already approached Misbun but the latter hasn't confirmed a date for the meeting.

Selvaraj said Misbun spoke to him on Monday and wanted to meet on Wednesday but it didn't materialise.
"Misbun wanted to meet on Wednesday although he didn't specify what he wanted to discuss. However, I waited for him but he didn't turn up and I was also unable to contact him," said Selvaraj.

"Misbun wanted to meet me before meeting the president. Although it was a good thing that he wanted to speak to me, BAM has already given the mandate to the president."

Nadzmi said on Sunday that a meeting last Saturday was postponed as Misbun wanted to concentrate on helping Lee Chong Wei win the Malaysia Open.

However, Misbun still seems apprehensive but delaying will not help anyone and the coach must make up his mind about his future with BAM as Nadzmi has made several efforts to meet the former and settle the issue.

Korea Open: Doubles redeem pride

Tan Boon Heong (front) and Koo Kien Keat avenged their Malaysia Open’s defeat to China’s Hong Wei-Shen Ye by securing a 25-23, 11-21, 21-19 win in the second round of the Korea Open yesterday.
LEE Chong Wei was in his element while Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong avenged their defeat to Hong Wei-Shen Ye, but only just, as they advanced to the quarter-finals of the US$1.2 million (RM3.65 million) Korea Open in Seoul yesterday.
Chong Wei demolished South Korean hope Park Sung Hwan 21-14, 21-9 in the second round to set up an interesting clash with China's rising star Wang Zhengming today.

Zhengming had a surprisingly easy 21-11, 21-14 win over compatriot Chen Jin, the world champion, to reach the last eight.

Kien Keat-Boon Heong, who were shocked in the first round of the Malaysia Open by Hong Wei-Shen Ye, had to battle right to the end to avoid another disaster by securing a 25-23, 11-21, 21-19 win in 55 minutes.
Kien Keat-Boon Heong's victory also ensured there will be a Malaysian pair in the semi-finals as they will meet compatriots Fairuzizuan Tazari-Ong Soon Hock in the last eight.

Fairuz-Soon Hock defeated Indonesia's Alvent Yulianto-Hendra Gunawan 21-18, 21-12 in just 25 minutes.

Olympic champion Lin Dan of China hardly showed any signs of the abdominal injury that floored him in the Malaysia Open as he thrashed Marc Zwiebler of Germany 21-9, 21-12 to set up a quarter-final clash with Indonesian foe Taufik Hidayat.

Taufik, who struggled to beat Wong Wing Ki of Hong Kong 19-21, 21-18, 21-17 yesterday, had criticised Lin Dan's tendency to withdraw from tournaments regularly and this could spice up the quarter-final encounter.

Peter Gade Christensen of Denmark also claimed a quarter-final spot by beating P. Kashyap of India 21-16, 21-13 and will meet Simon Santoso of Indonesia, who beat England's Rajiv Ouseph 21-19, 21-15, today.

Kenichi Tago of Japan edged fourth seed Chen Long of China 20-22, 23-21, 21-16 and will play another China shuttler Du Pengyu, who overcame compatriot Bao Chunlai 21-13, 21-16, in the last eight.

In the women's singles, Wong Mew Choo's aim of securing an upset over top seed Wang Xin of China didn't materialise as the Malaysian suffered a tame 21-16, 21-9 defeat in 31 minutes.

New Danish pair Mads Condrads Petersen-Jonas Rasmussen continued to impress as they toppled three-time world champions Cai Yun-Fu Haifeng of China 21-18, 17-21, 21-13 to reach the quarter-finals.

They set up an all Danish quarter-final clash with World No 1 Mathias Boe-Carsten Mogensen, who beat Japan's Naoki Kawamae-Shoji Sato 21-10, 21-10.

Commonwealth Games champs have mix day in Seoul

It was a mix day for the Commonwealth Games singles winners as Lee Chong Wei made it to the quarter-finals, but Saina Nehwal crashed out in three games on the second day of the VICTOR Korea Open Superseries Premier in Seoul on Thursday.
Saina NehwalMalaysian Chong Wei, who survived a scare on the opening day when Denmark’s Jan O Jorgensen took him to three games, made kimchi out of the challenge by South Korea’s Park Sung Hwan while Japan’s Sayaka Sato upset fourth seeded Saina in three games in the opening event of the new 2011 OSIM BWF World Superseries Premier.
World No. 1 Chong Wei was at the wrong end of a dubious line call from the first point of the match, but it didn’t rattle him as he kept his emotions in check to eventually beat Sung Hwan 21-14, 21-9 in just 36 minutes on the TV court.
The South Korea put up a good fight in the opening game but had no answer to Chong Wei’s devastating attacks and flicks in the second game and lost for the 10th time in 11 meetings.
Saina (right), meanwhile, looked to be on her way to the quarter-final when she took the first game 21-17 against Sato, a player she had never previously lost to. The young Japanese girl, however, had other ideas increased the tempo from the second game.
The high pressure game paid dividends as she worked Saina round the court and the Indian lass had to work hard just to return the shuttle. The tactics eventually saw Sato (below) take the next two games 21-19, 21-11 to enter the quarter-finals where she is will play Thailand’s Porntip Buranaprasertsuk.
Sayaka SatoThe 19-year-old former World Junior Championship runner-up scored one of the biggest wins of her career when she upset Germany’s  seventh seed Juliane Schenk in three games.
Porntip’s 21-16, 22-24, 21-15 was also her first ever victory over a top 10 player and will certainly give her career a big boost. The talented Porntip, who has just finished her first year at Chulalongkorn University, has already reached her highest ever world ranking at No. 23 and if she can continue her good run her, she may soon break into the top 20.

Another early exit for world champion on day of upsets

China’s world champion Chen Jin suffered another early exit as his horrible start to the new year saw him lose to an unseeded team mate in the second round of VICTOR Korea Open Superseries Premier tournament on Thursday, the first OSIM BWF World Superseries Premier tournament and badminton’s richest event with US$1.2 million on offer.
Kenichi TagoA week ago, the fourth seeded Chen Jin lost as the same stage in the PROTON Malaysia Open Superseries.
Last week is was Indonesia’s Simon Santoso who ousted the world champion but on Thursday, it was Chen Jin’s young team mate Wang Zhengming who created the upset, winning in straight games, 21-11, 21-14. Wang Zhengming will now play top seed Lee Chong Wei in the quarter-finals.
Following Chen Jin out the door are team mates Chen Long and Bao Chunlai, the fourth and eighth seeds respectively.
Chen Long was given the round around by Japanese youngest Kenichi Tago (above) who downed his more experienced opponent in three tough games, winning 20-22, 23-21, 21-16. Tago will now meet another Chinese player, Du Penyu, who upset Bao Chunlai 21-16, 21-13.
There were no such worries for former world champion Lin Dan, who has shrugged off an abdominal muscle injury which forced his withdrawal from the PROTON Malaysia Open Superseries quarter-finals last week, to reach the quarter-finals.
The reigning Olympic and Asian Games gold medallist, who is seeded sixth, cruised to an easy 21-9, 21-12 victory over Marc Zwiebler to set up a quarter-final clash against Taufik Hidayat.
The second seeded Indonesia reached the last eight when he came back from a first game deficit to beat Hong Kong’s Chan Yan Kit 19-21, 21-18, 21-17. Lin Dan will start as the favourite as he has yet to lose a match or even drop a game against Taufik since 2006.
Also reaching the last eight is former winner, Peter Gade of Denmark, who defeated India’s P Kashyap 21-16, 21-13.
There were more upsets in the women’s singles as fourth seed Indian Saina Nehwal, seventh seed Julia Schenk of Germany and eighth seeded South Korean Sung Ji Hyun  Bae Youn Joo were eliminated.
Saina, who is returning from injury lost 17-21, 21-19, 21-11 to Japan’s Sayaka Sato, while Schenk was beaten 21-16, 22-24, 21-15 by 19-year-old Porntip Buranaprasertsuk of Thailand.
Youn Joo, meanwhile, was taken out by team mate Sung Ji Hyun (right) who won 20-22, 21-17, 21-10.
There was no such upset for Denmark’s Tine Baun, who reached the last eight of her first tournament of the season with a straight forward 21-10, 21-18 victory over Japan’s Eriko Hirose.
