KUALA LUMPUR: Doubles shuttler Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif was unsure of his purpose in the national elite team just a few months ago.
Now that his target and goals have been clearly defined, Zakry is ready to make a last attempt to salvage his career in a partnership with Hoon Thien How.
And he hopes to get off to a good start in the Malaysia Open, which will be held at the Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil from Jan 18-23.
Zakry-Thien How is one of six pairs identified by the coaching and training committee last week to gun for qualification to the 2012 London Olympics.
The others are senior pairs Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong and Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari-Ong Soon Hock and the back-up squad’s Goh Wei Shem-Teo Kok Siang, Mak Hee Chun-Tan Wee Kiong and Chan Peng Soon-Lim Khim Wah.
Zakry was happy that together with Thien How, they had been given a second chance.
“Thien How and I did quite well at the Thomas Cup Finals last year but since then, we have not been stable,” he said.
“We have now been given the chance to make attempts to qualify for the Olympics and that has given us a new motivation.
“It show that the coaches still have faith in us. It is now our job to seriously work on our game.
“Our first task is to improve on our world rankings.”
For a start, a good showing at the Malaysia Open will help them to start moving up from the No. 87 spot.
“This is a very important year for us. We (Thien How and I) may have to review our careers if we are unable to make the cut for the Olympics,” said the 28-year-old Zakry.
Following a redraw made by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) for the men’s doubles competition of the Malaysia Open, Zakry-Thien are in the same quarter as top seeds Kien Keat-Boon Heong and former national pair Gan Teik Chai-Tan Bin Shen.
In the other half with second seeds Ko Sung-hyun-Yoo Yeon-seong of South Korea are two Malaysian pairs (Fairuzizuan-Soon Hock and Lee Wan Wah-Chan Chong Ming) and two Indonesian combinations (Luluk Hadiyanto-Candra Wijaya and Mohd Ahsan-Bona Septano).
The BWF’s events director, M. Venugopal, said that they had to make a redraw because of a seeding issue involving China’s scratch pair Guo Zhengdong-Chai Biao.
“Initially, Guo and Chai were not seeded because our system did not pick up their notional ranking points (usually used in scratch combinations). We rectified it and the Chinese pair are the fifth seeds,” he said.
