Denmark’s Tine Baun will have to beat on-form Wang Yihan of China on Friday to stand a chance of reaching the women’s singles emi-finals of the VICTOR BWF Superseries Finals.
Baun, who suffered a heartbreaking 21-18, 22-20 loss to Hong Kong’s Yip Pui Yin on Wednesday, bounced back in style 24 hours later to thrash Bulgaria’s Petya Nedelcheva 21-6, 21-17 to stay in contention for a place in the last four from Group B
Wang Yihan is almost assured of a place in the last four after scoring two wins from as many matches, beating Nedelcheva on Wednesday and Pui Yin a day later.
With Pui Yin heavily favoured to beat Nedelcheva, Baun can spoil Wang Yihan’s party with a big-margin victory.
In Group A, top seed Wang Shixian of China and South Korea’s Bae Youn Joo completed straight forward victories to advance to the Saturday’s semi-finals. The duo will clash on Friday to decide who tops the group.
Wang Shixian ended Salakjit Ponsana’s hopes of reaching the final four when she beat the Thai ace 21-8, 21-11 on Thursday. A day earlier, she had defeated Holland’s Yao Jie 21-14, 21-6.
Youn Joo, meanwhile, was just as effective as she crushed Yao Jie 21-16, 21-13 to confirm her semi-final ticket. The Korea had survived a scare on Wednesday before coming back from a one-game deficit to defeat Ponsana 19-21, 21-17, 21-11.
The semi-finalists in the men’s singles were all decided on Thursday with the matches on Friday to decide who tops which group.
In Group A, world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia will meet Danish veteran Peter Gade while in Group B it will be Chen Long of China and Thailand’s Boonsak Ponsana squaring off to decide the group champions.
Chong Wei ended the hopes of rising Danish star Jan O Jorgensen with a surprisingly easy 21-18, 21-13 victory over the Danish Open winner. Gade, meanwhile, ended Nguyen Tien Mihn’s hopes of an upset when he won 21-16, 21-18.
Although he just turned 34, Gade remains a dangerous player and only recently added a 10th Copenhagen Masters crown to his bulging trophy cabinet.
In Group B, former world and Olympic champion Taufik Hidayat was forced to retire in his match against China’s Chen Long. The Indonesian, who has had problems with his left toe, gave the rising Chinese star a good run for his money before bowing out 21-15, 14-11.
Hidayat was obviously not at his best and also struggled in his 21-18, 18-21, 21-7 defeat to Ponsana on Wednesday.
Ponsana booked his place in the last four when he defeated China’s Du Penyu 13-21, 21-11, 21-19. Du Pengyu had lost his opening match to Chen Long on Wednesday.
