Taufik, Hendra and Kido withdraw from tournament

Fri, 01/07/2011

Indonesian men’s duo Hendra Setiawan and Markis Kido retired from the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Super Series Finals in Taiwan on Thursday just three minutes into their match against Jung Jae-sung and Lee Yong-dae of South Korea.

The Beijing Olympics gold medalists retired as they trailed the Koreans 3-8 in Thursday’s second match in the men’s doubles Group B.

“Hendra injured his knee,” Kido was quoted as saying Thursday by Antara news agency, referring to an injury first sustained at the 16th Asian Games in Guangzhou in November last year.

Hendra had not fully recovered from the injury, but continued to play at the Hong Kong Open Super Series in (December), Kido added.

Due to the injury, the pair decided to withdraw from the US$500,000 season-ending tournament as well as from the upcoming Malaysia Open Super Series on Jan. 18-23.

However, Kido and Hendra expect to fully recover before the inaugural $1,200,000 Korea Open Premier Super Series on Jan 25-30. “We are still registered for that tournament,” Hendra said.

Indonesian men’s singles shuttler Taufik Hidayat also failed to complete his match against China’s Chen Long on Thursday. After losing 15-21 in the first game, Taufik retired in the 38th minute of the second game while trailing 11-14. He too withdrew from the tournament.

Meanwhile, women’s doubles pair Greysia Polii and Meiliana Jauhari posted their first victory on Thursday, defeating Anastasia Russkikh of Russia and Petya Nedelcheva of Bulgaria 21-18, 21-14. In their first Group A match, Greysia and Meiliana lost to Taiwan’s Cheng Wen Hsing and Chien Yu Chin in straight games.

The Indonesian women could advance to the semifinals if they defeat their last rivals, Japan’s Miyuki Maeda and Satoko Suetsuna, on Friday.

World number three mixed doubles pair Vita Marissa and Hendra Aprida Gunawan booked their second victory after defeating Polish pair Robert Mateusiak and Nadiezda Zieba in a 54-minute match 21-14, 17-21, 24-22. This was the pair’s second three-set match, following their win over Thailand’s Sudket Prapakamol and Saralee Thoungthongkam on Wednesday.

Their last opponents on Friday will be South Korea’s Ha Jung Eun and Ko Sung Hyun.

Only the two best singles and pairs from each group advance to the semifinals.
