PBSI introduces newly hired coach Li Mao
JAKARTA: Former South Korea singles coach Li Mao of China will soon begin his tenure as Indonesia’s singles coach at the Indonesia Badminton Association (PBSI)’s national camp in Cipayung, East Jakarta.
Li, who recently completed his term of contract with the South Korean national team, was introduced to the athletes and coaches at the PBSI camp on Wednesday.
“We introduced [Li] to our athletes and coaches today. It is not longer a rumor that he will be coaching here,” PBSI secretary general Jacob Rusdianto said, as quoted by Antara news agency on Wednesday.
Jacob said Li would be staying at the camp’s dorm during his two-year tenure in Indonesia.
Li coached Malaysia’s national team for two years. But, in 2007, he left the country before completing his coaching contract due to what he termed an “unfavourable” coaching system for both singles and doubles there.
Li, who left China in 1999 to coach overseas after a dispute with China’s current national coach Li Yongbo, also had a scuffle with China’s top shuttler Lin Dan at the finals of the Korean Open Super Series in 2008.
Meanwhile, the empty position of national men’s doubles coach after the recent resignation of Sigit Pamungkas will be filled temporarily by head coach Christian Hadinata, coach Endra Mulyajaya and coach Bambang Supriyanto. — JP
