Chong Wei in semis, end of the road for Koo-Tan

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia’s Lee Chong Wei sealed a place in semi-final of the Super Series Masters Finals in Taipei yesterday but it was a painful start to the year for Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong.
Chong Wei continued to stay on top of his game yesterday to beat Denmark’s Jan O Jorgensen 21-18, 21-13. He will play against another Dane, Peter Gade-Christensen, in a match today to decide the Group A winner.
In Group B, Thailand’s Boonsak Ponsana and Chen Long of China are as good as through to the semi-finals after winning their matches in contrasting fashion.
Ponsana took three games to beat Du Pengyu 13-21, 21-13, 21-10 while Chen Long had a relatively easy workout after Taufik Hidayat of Indonesia conceded a walkover when trailing 11-14 in the second game after having lost the first at 15-21.
In the men’s doubles, 2008 Masters Finals champions Kien Keat-Boon Heong could not get their game going and were beaten 21-14, 15-21, 17-21 by China’s third ranked pair of Chai Biao-Zhang Nan in 51 minutes. It was their first defeat by the youngsters.
The defeat was the second for Kien Keat-Boon Heong in Group A and they are out of the semi-finals even if they beat China’s Cai Yun-Fu Haifeng in straight games today.
They will lose out on game difference to either Chai Biao-Zhang Nan or Koreans Ko Sung-hyun-Yoo Yeon-seong, who defeated them on Wednesday.
National coach Rosman Razak did not want to read too much into the failure of Kien Keat-Boon Heong to reach the semi-finals.
“It was unfortunate that they lost to this Chinese pair for the first time. They were not in the best condition and did not really get into their game today,” said Rosman in a telephone interview.
“The defeat did not really come as a big surprise to me. They lacked proper training coming into this tournament.
“They have one match more to play. They have to continue working on their game and be better prepared for two upcoming Open tournaments.”
Kien Keat-Boon Heong will be defending the title in the Malaysia Open (Jan 18-23), which is the opening leg of the Super Series. They will be in South Korea for the first Super Series Premier Open tournament scheduled for Jan 25-30.
