Chinese youngsters slay top seeds to reach semi-finals

Friday, January 07, 2011

Up and coming Chinese pair Zhang Nan-Chai Biao stunned top seeded South Koreans Ko Sung Hyun-Yoo Yeon Seong 21-19, 15-21, 21-18 to reach the semi-finals of the VICTOR BWF Super Series Finals in Chinese Taipei on Friday.
The Chinese youngsters, who have found it hard to surpass the achievements of three-time world champions Fu Haifeng-Cai Yun, showed they are ready to take on a more senior role with their march to the final four, where they will face defending champions Jung Jae Sung-Lee Yong Dae of South Korea.

Fu Haifeng-Cai Yun, who topped Group A, will meet world No. 1s Carsten Mogensen-Mathias Boe in the cross over semi-finals in what is sure to be an explosive encounter.
Despite losing their opening match to their more experienced team mates on Wednesday, the young Chinese duo bounced back to trounced 2008 Super Series champions Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong on Thursday.
In a winner-takes-all match with the No. 1 seeds, Zhang Nan-Chai Biao showed no fear despite trailing for most of the match. They showed guts and determination to claim a famous victory and move one step towards walking out of Fu Haifeng-Cai Yun’s massive shadow.
There was only one match in Group B, following the withdrawal of Hendra Setiawan-Markis Kido on Thursday and it was between Jae Sung-Yong Dae and Mogensen-Boe.
Both pairs had already qualified for the semi-final and were playing to decide who topped the group. The Asian duo were quick off the block and never looked back as they wrapped up a comprehensive 21-18, 21-15 victory.
Chinese Taipei’s Cheng Wen Hsing-Chien Yu Chin completed their entry into the women’s doubles semi-finals in front of their adoring fans with a tough three-game victory over the Russian-Bulgarian combination of Anastasia Russkikh-Petya Nedelcheva on Friday.
The world No.1s, who had won their previous two Group A ties in straight games, entered the match knowing they had already qualified for the semi-finals. As such, they were not at the top of their game in the opening stages and paid a heavy price when they fell behind 23-25.
The loss woke them from their slumber and they began to attack the Europeans before completing a 21-13, 21-12 victory to ensure they finish top of Group A.
Joining them in the last four are Japan’s Miyuki Maeda-Satoko Suetsuna, who defeated Indonesia’s Greysia Polii-Meeliana Jauhari 21-15, 21-15.
The Japanese duo will now meet Group B winners Wang Xiaoli-Yu Yang of China while Wen Hsing-Chien Yu Chin square off against another Chinese pair, Cheng Shu-Zhao Yunlei.
Unseeded Thai pair Songphon Anugritayawan-Kunchala Voravichitchaikul reached the mixed doubles semi-finals when they topped Group A after beating England’s Nathan Robertson-Jenny Wallwork 21-16, 14-21, 21-17 on Friday. They will be joined in the final four by China’s Zhang Nan-Zhao Yunlei, who had an off day due to the withdrawal of top seeds Thomas Laybourn-Kamilla Rytter Juhl. The Danes pulled out of the event after Laybourn injured his left knee.
Poles D3Group B saw a tight finish as three pairs ended the round robin competition with identical records of two wins and one loss.
Ha Jung Eun-Ko Su Hyun of South Korea, second seeds Thailand’s Sudket Prapakamol-Saralee Thoungthongkam and Indonesia’s Vita Marissa-Hendra Aprida Gunawan were all tied after each beat the hapless Robert Mateusiak-Nadiezda Zieba of Poland (left) and traded victories among themselves.
In the end, it was the South Koreans who topped the group on count back ahead of the Thailand and Indonesian pairs. Jung Eun-Su Hyun will now face Zhang Nan-Zhao Yunlei while Prapakamol-Thoungthongkam will clash with team mates Anugritayawan-Voravichitchaikul in the semi-finals.
