Chong Wei beats Peter Gade to check into the semis in Taiwan

Saturday January 8, 2011

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia’s Lee Chong Wei is on track to become the most successful singles player in the lucrative US$500,000 Super Series Masters Finals when he checked into the semi-finals in confident style at Taipei yesterday.
The world No. 1 scored a 21-14, 21-12 win over Peter-Gade Christensen of Denmark to wrap up his Group A matches without any defeats.
In the semis, Chong Wei will take on Thailand’s Boonsak Ponsana and Christensen will face China’s rising star and Group B winner Chen Long.
The 29-year-old Chong Wei is hoping to start the year with a bang – by winning the Masters Finals for the third time in a row. And he is capable of pulling it off provided he continues to be focused on the task at hand.
Yesterday, national coach Teh Seu Bock applauded Chong Wei for his single-minded pursuit for glory.
“Yes, Peter did not give Chong Wei a tough fight but Chong Wei did not take it easy either. He stuck to his game plan and played well to finish the job in 29 minutes,” said Seu Bock.
“The only problem Chong Wei faces here is the slow shuttle. For a fast attacking player like Chong Wei, it is an additional challenge. But he is trying to adapt as best as he can.”
On his semi-final opponent Boonsak, Seu Bok said: “Chong Wei lost to Boonsak in the team event at the Guangzhou Asian Games. A few days later, he defeated Boonsak in the individual event at the same venue. He will tread with caution against the Thai but I am confident he will pull through.”
In the men’s doubles, Malaysia’s Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong conceded a walkover against Cai Yun-Fu Haifeng of China in their last Group A match.
Kien Keat was down with a sore arm and national coach Rosman Razak didn’t want to risk fielding them.
“The outcome of the match is of no importance to Koo and Tan as they are not in the running for a place in the semi-finals. And because of Koo’s condition, we decided to withdraw,” said Rosman. “It is risky to field him – especially with the Opens in Malaysia and South Korea around the corner. Koo’s injury is not serious but it is best that he does not over-exert.”
Cai Yun-Haifeng and compatriots Chai Biao-Zhang Nan made it to the semis as the top two pairs in Group A. They will take on Carsten Mogensen-Mathias Boe of Denmark and South Koreans Lee Yong-dae-Jung Jae-sung in today’s semi-finals respectively.
