Malaysia, powered by double gold medallist Cheah Liek Hou, topped the medal standings in the Parabadminton event at the Asian Para Games which concluded in Guangzhou, China on Sunday.
The Malaysians bagged three gold, one silver and four bronze to finish top of the pack with China, South Korea and Vietnam picking up two gold medals each in the Parabadminton event. China, however, emerged overall champions of the inaugural Asian Para Games with 185 gold, 118 silver and 86 bronze medals while Japan finished second on 32 gold, 39 silver and 32 bronze medals.
South Korea, which will host the second edition of the Games in 2014, took third place with 27 gold, 43 silver and 33 bronze.
Forty-five countries with 5,500 paralympic athletes competed in 19 events at the Games.
In badminton, 139 players competed from 14 countries.
Like Hou took gold in the men’s singles BMSTU category and later teamed up with S. Laiman to win the men’s doubles title in the BMSTU4/5 category to give the Malaysian contingent plenty to cheer about.
Malaysia took the third gold medal in the women’s singles BMSTL2 category thanks to the efforts of Nabilah Ahmat Sharif.
China’s gold medals came via Zhu Peiqiang in the men’s singles BMSTU4 category and Ma Huihui in the women’s singles BMSTL3 category respectively.
The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Governing Board, which also met in Guangzhou prior to the start of the Asian Para Games, also gave badminton a boost when it approved the Badminton World Federation (BWF) as an IPC Recognised International Federation.
It is a status that recognizes the PBWFs (Parabadminton World Federation) and BWF’s contribution towards building Parabadminton up to a level whereby it could be included into a future Paralympic programme of sports.Yangyang Rg | Create your badge
