RI top shuttlers have a bad start at Super Series Finals

Top Indonesian shuttlers suffered early defeats at the Badminton World Federation (BWF)’s Super Series Finals arena in Taipei on Wednesday.

Men’s singles world No. 2 Taufik Hidayat bowed out to Thai Boonsak Ponsana 18-21, 21-18, 7-21 in their Group B’s round-robin. It was Boonsak’s first triumph over the 2004 Athens Olympics winner after nine face-offs.

The 28-year-old Boonsak will face Du Pengyu of China, while Taufik will have to win over Chen Long of China — who beat Du on Wednesday — in Thursday’s matches to stay in the competition.

In Group A, top seeded Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia defeated Nguyen Tien Minh of Vietnam 21-12, 21-17 while Peter Gade of Denmark struggled to overcome compatriot Jan O Jorgensen 21-11, 18-21, 21-16 in over an hour.

Indonesia’s men’s doubles Markis Kido and Hendra Setiawan lost to Mathias Boe and Carsten Mogensen of Denmark 12-21, 21-23 in Group B match. Kido and Hendra, the 2008 Beijing Olympics gold medalists, failed to take revenge on the top seeds after losing the two previous matches.

The Indonesians are facing South Koreans Jung Jae Sung and Lee Yong Dae on Thursday. Kido and Hendra won three of their seven encounters with the Koreans. To stay on course, they have to win against the world number six Koreans and defeat Group B rivals Fang Chieh Min and Lee Shen Mu of Taiwan.

In Group A, tough Chinese pair Fu Hai Feng and Cai Yun seized a win over countrymen Chai Biao and Zhang Nan 23-21, 16-21, 21-17. They are slated to face Malaysia’s top duo of Tan Boon Heong and Koo Kien Keat and South Korean pair of Koo Sun Hyun and Yoo Yeon Seong. The Malaysians were still playing against the Korean as of press time.

Indonesia’s women’s doubles also had bad luck in Taipei after Meiliana Jauhari and Greysia Polii lost 13-21, 15-21 to host pair Chen Wen Hsing and Chien Yu Chin in a Group A match.

In the next matches, the Indonesians will have to overcome Japanese pair Miyuki Maeda and Satoko Suetsuna and mixed nationality-pair Anastasia Russkikh of Russia and Petya Nedelcheva of Bulgaria to remain in the game. Maeda and Suetsuna won 21-19, 21-12 over Russkikh and Nedelcheva.

The only Indonesians who had a smooth start were mixed doubles Hendra Aprida Gunawan and Vita Marissa, who defeated Thailand’s Sudket Prapakamol and Saralee Thoungthongkam 16-21, 21-10, 22-20 in Group B. Hendra and Vita will meet Polish pair Robert Mateusiak and Nadiezda Zieba and South Korean pair Ha Jung Eun and Ko Sun Hyung. Ha and Ko upset third seeded Mateusiak and Zieba in a 21-18, 21-18 win
