Saina and Fischer-Neilsen breeze through while South Korean duo maintain good form

India’s Saina Nehwal and Denmark’s Joachim Fischer-Nielsen showed no signs of injuries which have bugged them in recent times to reach the second round of the VICTOR Korea Open Superseries Premier in Seoul on Wednesday. Joining them in the second round are South Korean sensations Eom Hye Won-Kim Ha Na.
Saina, winner of three Superseries events last year and five titles in all, skipped the VICTOR BWF Super Series Finals in Chinese Taipei earlier this month and also last week’s PROTON Malaysia Open Superseries, the opening event of the 2011 OSIM BWF World Superseries with an ankle injury
Up against Chinese Taipei’s Tai Tzu Ying, who she beat in last year’s Singapore Open, Saina was pushed to the limit and was lucky to survive a three-game encounter which could have gone either way. In the end, Saina's experience was the difference as the former world No. 2 overcame a first game deficit to score a 19-21, 21-14, 22-20 victory in 49 minutes.
Fischer-Nielsen and his partner Christinna Pedersen were losing semi-finalists in the PROTON Malaysia Open mixed doubles competition after the former suffered aggravated an old knee injury which prevented them from completing their match against eventually champions He Hanbin-Ma Jin of China.
This time, the Danes were looking fit as fiddles but it was their Singapore opponents Chayut Triyachart-Vanessa Neo Yu Yan who had to retire in the match with Fischer-Nielsen and Pedersen winning 21-9, 11-3.
Eom-KimMeanwhile, in the women’s doubles, up and coming South Korean pair Hye Won-Ha Na (left), followed up their heroics from the PROTON Malaysia Open where they reached the second round after beating the more experienced Indonesian pair of Vita Marissa-Nadya Melati.
In Seoul, they once against beat an Indonesian pair, this time Meiliana Jauhari-Greysia Polii were their victims as the young Koreans won 21-14, 21-16 to set up a rematch with world No. 1s Cheng Wen Hsing-Chien Yu Chin of Chinese Taipei, the pair who ended their run in Kuala Lumpur last week.
Meanwhile, Denmark’s veteran and young combination of Jonas Rasmussen-Mads Conrads-Petersen lived up to their word as they defeated China’s Guo Zhendong-Chai Biao in the opening round.
On Sunday, it was the Chinese duo who got the better of their Danish counterparts in the final of the PROTON Malaysia Open Superseries in straight games but in Seoul, it was the Danes who got the upper hand, winning 21-14, 21-17.
