BAM want Misbun to think of Olympic glory first

KUALA LUMPUR: The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) want Misbun Sidek to stay on as the coach of world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei for the sake of Olympic glory.
They are willing to take another look at the grouses that led to Misbun’s shocking resignation on Dec 31.
And they may even strike some form of compromise with the shuttler.
BAM, however, stressed that this would not be at the expense of changing their coaching and training structure.
Misbun had expressed his unhappiness – both in written and verbal forms – to BAM president Datuk Seri Nadzmi Mohd Salleh on several decisions made by the coaching and training committee.
He felt slighted that his request to train and use his son Ramdan and several other juniors as sparring partners for Chong Wei was turned down.
Yesterday, after a three-hour meeting with the exco, Nadzmi said that BAM did not want to lose the services of Misbun and hoped to meet up with the long-serving coach so as to come to an agreement for him to stay on – at least until the 2012 London Olympic Games.
“We (the exco) are requesting Misbun to re-consider his (quit) decision,” said Nadzmi.
“We are all of the opinion that the London Olympic Games is very important to us. Chong Wei needs his coach and we do not want anything to disrupt our planning.
“Our main interest is to win glory at the Olympics. And I urge Misbun, Chong Wei and all BAM officials to put national interests first.”
Nadzmi said he would deal with Misbun’s issues when they meet up.
“I hope he is prepared to sit down with us and openly discuss the issues he has raised. I am not at loggerheads with Misbun. We are on talking terms,” said Nadzmi.
“Misbun has contributed a lot and played a significant role as a coach. But he has his own perception of things and, maybe, did not understand the reasons for some of the changes we are making. We hope to make him understand why we need him to re-consider his decision.”
Nadzmi said that there would be some form of compromise but refused to elaborate.
“The compromise should be both ways. Yes, even in a family, we make compromises when we have a tiff. I hope to clear the air with my explanation when I meet him,” he said. Asked whether BAM were willing to put Ramdan under Misbun’s charge as requested, Nadzmi said: “We will not change the training and coaching structure. It will stand.
“We want to do things for the betterment of the sport and we know that Misbun wants the same. We have a common goal and let’s hope we will be able to put our personal interests above all.”
Nadzmi said he had not decided when to meet Misbun but promised to resolve the matter soon.
Hopefully, it will be before the Proton Malaysia Open from Jan 18-23 at the Putra Stadium, where Chong Wei will be defending his title.
