PETALING JAYA: World No. 2 Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong may find themselves in hot water if they suffer an early blow in the South Korea Open.
The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) high performance director, Datuk James Selvaraj, said yesterday that he was not too pleased with the duo’s performances in the last two tournaments this month and had urged them to regain their status as a force to be reckoned with at the tournament in Seoul.
Kien Keat-Boon Heong started the year on a miserable note, failing to clear the group stage in the 2010 Super Series Masters Finals in Taipei. Their pride took a further beating in the Malaysia Open last week, suffering a shocking first-round defeat by Chinese youngsters Hong Wei-Shen Ye.
The duo has also dropped one rung in the world rankings after holding the No. 1 spot for more than a year.
James said that he would haul up the players and also the coaches, Rexy Mainaky and Rosman Razak, if the poor run continued.
“I have not had a chance to speak to either the players or the coaches. They will have a lot to answer if they return from Seoul with bad results,” he said.
“I want to see the players show strong passion to become champions. I watched them play against the Chinese pair (at the Malaysia Open) and I was disappointed with the manner in which they lost the match. It was quite unacceptable to me.
“Their mission in the Korea Open is to bounce back with a better showing. Nothing less is expected from them.”
Kien Keat-Boon Heong are the second seeds and they have a tricky opening round match tomorrow against third ranked Cho Gun-woo-Kwon Yi-goo of South Korea.
In the same half of the draw are Indonesians Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan, Alven Yulianto-Hendra Gunawan; South Korea’s Lee Yong-dae-Jung Jae-sung and Malaysia’s Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari-Ong Soon Hock.
The other half has top seeds Mathias Boe-Carsten Mogensen of Denmark, China’s Cai Yun-Fu Haifeng; South Koreans Ko Sung-hyun-Yoo Yeon-seong; Indonesians Bona Septano-Mohd Ahsan and Candra Wijaya-Luluk Hadiyanto; and Malaysians Gan Teik Chai-Tan Bin Shen and Teo Kok Siang-Goh Wei Shem.
Teik Chai-Bin Shen are staring at an early exit in an opening match against world No. 1 Boe-Mogensen while the national back-up pair of Kok Siang-Wei Shem play against Holland’s Ruud Bosch-Koen Ridder.
