KUALA LUMPUR: World number one shuttler Lee Chong Wei is happy to learn that the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) want to retain his coach Misbun Sidek’s services.
What would be even better for the shuttler is Misbun retracting his quit decision, which he made via e-mail on Dec 31.
Misbun had quit citing unhappiness over several BAM coaching and training committee’s decisions.
Chong Wei then threw his support behind his coach, saying he would leave the BAM fold if his coach quit.
The BAM executive council, led by president Datuk Seri Nadzmi Mohd Salleh, met for three hours on Wednesday and decided that they wanted Misbun to reconsider his decision to quit as chief coach.
And this has gone down well with Chong Wei, who feels that he is now ready to shift his focus to defending his title in the Malaysia Open, which will begin on Wednesday at the Putra Stadium.
“They (BAM) have heard my voice. They have looked into my needs as far as my preparation for the Olympic Games is concerned and they have also decided to put the interests of the nation first,” said Chong Wei.
“BAM want to meet up with Misbun again.
“I hope this time they will cooperate with him.
“It is important that all of us work together.”
The BAM are expected to strike a deal with Misbun although the national body insisted that they would not make any changes to the coaching and training structure.
It is not known what kind of compromise will be reached but all efforts will be made to get Misbun to coach Chong Wei as soon as possible so that the shuttler can fully focus on his game – especially in his preparations for the 2012 London Olympic Games.
“Hopefully, all this will be resolved as quickly as possible,” said the shuttler, who has been top seeded for the Malaysia Open.
Chong Wei, fresh from winning the Super Series Masters Finals in Taipei on Sunday, admitted that it would be a huge challenge for him to win his sixth Malaysia Open title in the presence of several top guns.
Those in his half are three-time world champion Lin Dan of China, Chen Long of China and Malaysians Mohd Hafiz Hashim and Wong Choong Hann.
Chong Wei is expected to meet Lin Dan in the semi-finals.
“It will not be easy but I’ll give it my best. It is my goal to defend the title,” said Chong Wei.
Second seed Taufik Hidayat of Indonesia, South Korean Park Sung-hwan, China’s Bao Chunlai and Chen Jin, Thailand’s Boonsak Ponsana and two other Indonesians – Sony Dwi Kuncoro and Simon Santoso – are in the lower half of the draw.
Meanwhile, the probable meeting between Chong Wei and Lin Dan in the Malaysia Open next week has seen badminton fans frenziedly snapping up tickets for the semi-final stage onwards.
