Chong Wei struggles in Seoul
LEE Chong Wei dropped a game for the first time in his last three tournaments but safely came through while women's singles Wong Mew Choo scalped another China player en route to the second round of the Korea Open in Seoul yesterday.
Chong Wei made a fiery start, but then allowed Jan Jorgensen of Denmark to dictate terms in the second game but recovered to secure a 21-9, 18-21, 21-16 win in 54 minutes.
Mew Choo, who beat former world champion Lu Lan in last week's Malaysia Open, continued her resurgence toppling China's youngster Liu Xin 21-18, 21-15 in 36 minutes.
Chong Wei, the World No 1, is on course for a hat-trick of titles after winning the World Super Series Masters in Taipei and the Malaysia Open on Sunday without losing a game.
However, Jorgensen almost unseated the Malaysian and Chong Wei will tread cautiously in his next match against either South Korean Park Sung Hwan or Przemyslaw Wacha of Poland today.
Mew Choo has another tough encounter today against top seed Wang Xin of China, who beat Maria Febe Kusumastuti of Inodnesia 21-11, 21-13. Wang Xin eliminated Mew Choo at the same stage last week.
Hafiz Hashim's final tournament under the BA of Malaysia (BAM) banner was something to forget after he lost 21-16, 21-13 to Marc Zwiebler of Germany.
China's World No 5 Lin Dan erased any doubts of his fitness when he secured an easy 21-15, 21-15 win over Tommy Sugiarto of Indonesia. He next plays Zwiebler.
Veteran Wong Choong Hann was also shown the exit in the first round by world champion Chen Jin of China who earned a 21-9, 21-17 win.
In the men's doubles, Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong defeated South Koreans Cho Gun Woo-Kwon Yi Goo 21-11, 21-17.
They will play Shen Ye-Hong Wei of China, who beat Michael Fuchs-Oliver Roth of Germany 21-12, 21-8, today. Shen Ye-Hong Wei upstaged Kien Keat-Boon Heong in the first round of the Malaysia Open.
Fairuzizuan Tazari-Ong Soon Hock cleared the first hurdle, albeit in three games, when they beat Germany's Ingo Kindervater-Johannes Schoettler 21-13, 20-22, 21-18.
Back-up pair Goh Wei Shem-Teo Kok Siang crashed 21-13, 21-18 to China's Liu Xiaolong-Qiu Zihan while professional pair Gan Teik Chai-Tan Bin Shen lost 22-20, 21-15 to World No 1 Mathias Boe-Carsten Mogensen of Denmark.
Zakry Latif-Hoon Thien How, who lost to Japan's Naoki Kawamae-Shoji Sato in the Malaysia Open, fell again to a 21-16, 22-20 defeat.
Denmark's Mads Condrads Petersen-Jona Rasmussen lived up to their promise when they downed Malaysia Open champions Guo Zhendong-Chai Biao of China 21-14, 21-17. Petersen-Rasmussen were beaten by the China pair on Sunday.
