They may be the defending men’s doubles champions but Jung Jae Sung-Lee Yong Dae will not underestimate their rivals in the Victor BWF Super Series Finals 2010 which began in Taipeh on Wednesday.
The five-day tournament which is for the top eight singles players and pairs in the Super Series standings, has attracted a stellar cast with China’s Wang Xin the only world No. 1 missing from the meet as there are two other Chinese ladies – Wang Yihan and Wang Shixian – were ahead of her in the Super Series standings after the 12 Super Series tournaments. The tournament rules only allow a maximum of two representatives from each country to participate in each category.
Jae Sung-Yong Dae opened their campaign with a straight forward 21-16, 21-17 victory over local lads Fang Chieh Min-Lee Sheng Mu.
Their real tests will come in the next two outings where they are scheduled to face world No. 1s Carsten Mogensen-Mathias Boe of Denmark (below) and Asian Games champions Hendra Setiawan-Markis Kido.
“The match was not as easy as it looked. It was a hard match and we are happy to have won,” said Jae Sung. “We always go into a tournament with the aim of doing our best, and it is no different with this tournament. However, it is not going to be easy as there are many good pairs in the Finals.”
Boe, meanwhile, was delighted he and his partner got off to perfect start when they defeated Setiawan-Kido 21-12, 23-21 in their opening match.
“Good start because first match is always difficult. We didn't play that well as we are not at the top of our game, but importantly, we won the match,” he said.
“We are looking to win another match as that will virtually secure place in next stage and that is the immediate target. It does not matter whether we top the table or not – the priority is to get through to the semis.”
In Group A, 2008 champions and former world No. 1s Tan Boon Heong-Koo Kean Keat of Malaysai (picture, below) were given a rude shock when they lost 21-15, 22-20 to South Korea’s Ko Sung Hyun-Yoo Yeon Seong.
Their fate now hangs in the balance as they have two Chinese walls to cross in the form of former world No. 1s Fu Haifeng-Cai Yun (China) and Chai Biao-Zhang Nan. Fu Haifeng-Cai Yun (China) defeated their team mates 23-21, 16-21, 21-17 on Wednesdsay.
In the women’s doubles local favourites and world No. 1s Cheng Wen Hsing-Chien Yu Chin took a step closer to reaching the semi-finals when they defeated Indonesia’s Greysia Polii-Meeliana Jauhari 21-13, 21-15 in a Group A match while Japan’s Miyuki Maeda-Satoko Suetsuna beat the only European pair in the women’s draw, Anastasia Russkikh-Petya Nedelcheva of Russia and Bulgaria 21-19, 21-12.
In Group B, China’s Wang Xiaoli-Yu Yang (China) outlasted team mates Cheng Shu-Zhao Yunlei 18-21, 21-18, 21-14 while Japan’s Mizuki Fujii-Reika Kakiiwa beat Duanganong Aroonkesorn-Kunchala Voravichitchaikul of Thailand 21-13, 21-14.
Denmark’s Thomas Laybourn-Kamilla Rytter Juhl gave Europe something to smile abou when they defeated England’s Nathan Robertson-Jenny Wallwork 21-18, 18-21, 21-14 in Group A of the mixed-doubles competition. Also winning on the opening day were Thailand’s Songphon Anugritayawan-Kunchala Voravichitchaikul who defeated China’s Zhang Nan-Zhao Yunlei 22-20, 17-22, 21-14.
In Group B, South Korea’s Ha Jung Eun-Ko Su Hyun (Kor) edged Poland’s Robert Mateusiak-Nadiezda Zieba 21-18, 21-18 and Vita Marissa-Hendra Aprida Gunawan of Indonesia upset Thailand’s Sudket Prapakamol-Saralee Thoungthongkam 16-21, 21-10, 22-20.
