Boon Heong sets his sights on nailing the world title this year

Born in the year of the rabbit, doubles shuttler Tan Boon Heong is ready to hop over all kind of obstacles this year to nail the most elusive but prized trophy – the world title.
The 24-year-old Boon Heong is hoping that this year would be a year to savour for him.
“It has to better than last season,” said Boon Heong, who only won one Super Series title with partner Koo Kien Keat in 2010 at the Putra Stadium.
“One thing that is close to my heart and still missing from my collection is the world title.”
The world championships will be held in London from Aug 8-14. Last year, Boon Heong-Kien Keat came agonsingly close but went down to Cai Yun-Fu Haifeng of China in the final in Paris.
“It is high time that Kien Keat and I are known as the world champions. I am born in the rabbit year (1987) and hopefully, this will be my best year with my partner,” he said.
When asked what qualities, feature or characters of a rabbit that he likes most, Boon Heong said: “It is clean. It is also an animal with strong will. I am determined to keep a clean record as far as my badminton game is concerned this year.”
Boon Heong formed a lethal partnership with Kien Keat in late 2006 and some of the major titles under their belt so far are the 2006 Asian Games gold, 2007 All-England title, 2008 BWF Super Series Masters Finals crown, 2009 Malaysia and Denmark Super Series titles and 2010 Commonwealth Games gold.
Boon Heong said he was ready to regain his momentum after the setback with Kien Keat at the Super Series Masters Finals in Taipei last week. They failed to reach the semi-finals.
“We lacked training and it translated into a lack of coordination between Kien Keat and I at Taipei. Both of us just did not have the feeling and rhythm in our game,” he said.
”It was not a desired start for Kien Keat and me but we are confident that things will only get better for us.”
The lanky shuttler from Kedah said that they were ready to strut their stuff at the the Proton Malaysia Open, which will begin on Wednesday at the Putra Stadium.
They are the defending champions and hopes are high on them to live up to their top seeding.
In the absence of four top pairs – Cai Yun-Fu Haifeng (Chn), Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan (Ina), Lee Yong-dae-Jung Jae-sung (Kor) and Mathias Boe-Carsten Mogensen (Den), the chances look good for the Malaysians to give the home fans some cheer.
But if past records are anything to go by, one pair – Ko Sung-hyun-Yoo Yeon-seong – could spoil their party. The Malaysians have lost in all four encounters against the second ranked Koreans.
Barring any upsets, Kien Keat-Boon Heong are expected to meet the second seeded Koreans in the final.
