Withdrawals of some players a boon to our back-up boys

THE withdrawal of several players, including Indonesian Sony Dwi Kuncoro, is a blessing in disguise for all the Malaysian elite back-up singles shuttlers.
Yesterday, Sony, who is plagued by a back injury, was confirmed absent together with India’s P. Kashyap and Malaysia’s Tan Chun Seang.
Their withdrawal opened up spots for Liew Daren, Chong Wei Feng and Chan Kwong Beng to play in the qualifying tournament, which will be held today.
And the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) coaching and training committee chairman, Ng Chin Chai, hoped the second stringers would come good.
“Chun Seang has not recovered from his injury (foot) and had to withdraw. But we have three others in the fray and this is a good chance for them to deliver some good results,” he said.
Daren will take on Hsueh Hsuan-yi of Taiwan while Wei Feng takes on Tommy Sugiarto of Indonesia. It will be easier for Chan Kwong Beng against Taiwanese Chou Tien-chen.
Former international K. Yogendran also has a place in the qualifying tournament, replacing top seed Brice Leverdez of France, who moved into the main draw.
