Lin Dan out to end his Malaysian jinx

Lin Dan has won all the major titles on offer in the badminton world but there is one thing missing from the Chinese ace’s trophy cabinet – the PROTON Malaysia Open.
The reigning Olympic and Asian Games champion, who is also a three-time world champion, has the perfect opportunity to put this right when he plays in the season-opening event of the 2011 OSIM BWF World Superseries which starts at Putra Stadium on Wednesday.
If all goes to plan, Lin Dan will have the opportunity to meet world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia in the semi-finals. The last time the duo met at the same venue, Lin Dan emerged victorious as China beat Malaysia in the Thomas Cup.
However, he has yet to get the better of the six-time Malaysia Open champion when playing in the said tournament, which this year offers US$400,000 in prize money.
In fact, the Malaysia Open has been a stranglehold for the host nation as their men have won the singles title 33 times in the 53 occasions the event has been since 1937.
The last non-Malaysian winner is Denmark’s Peter Gade in 2007, who unfortunately, is missing this year as he has opted to play in next week’s VICTOR South Korea Open instead. The last Chinese men to win the Malaysia Open is Chen Hong in 2003 Gade, who turned 34 last year, is playing in less tournaments  this year to minimise injuries to his battered body and as much as he would have loved another crack at the Malaysia title, he opted for the VICTOR South Korea Open, which is an OSIM BWF World Superseries Premier tournaments and offers a record US$1.2 million in prize money.
Besides Korea, the other OSIM BWF World Superseries Premier tournaments are YONEX All England Superseries Premier 2011 (March 8-13), DJARUM Indonesian Open Superseries Premier 2011 (June 21-26), Denmark Superseries Premier 2011 (Oct 18-23) and LI NING China Open Superseries Premier 2011 (Nov 22-27).
Besides Lin Dan, the other top Chinese players who will be in action at Putra Stadium are world champion Chen Jin (right), Chen Long, Du Penyu and Bao Chunlai.
Indonesia’s Taufik Hidayat is the second seed and will have a big say on the outcome of the tournament.
