Winning return for Denmark’s World No. 1s

Denmark’s Mathias Boe-Carsten Mogensen make a winning return to the badminton world after a two-week break when they won their opening match at the VICTOR Korea Open Superseries Premier, the opening event of the new OSIM BWF World Superseries Premier calendar.
The world No. 1 men’s doubles pair, who had a successful outing in Chinese Taipei earlier this month when they captured their first ever VICTOR BWF Super Series Finals season-ending title, skipped the PROTON Malaysia Open Superseries last week to get ready for Korea, which is offering the richest prize money in badminton history – US$1.2 million.
It was a calculated move by the Danes, who opted out of the hot and humid PROTON Malaysia Open for the cool, cold, icy weather of Seoul as participation in the OSIM BWF World Superseries Premier tournaments is compulsory for the top ranked players.
And they didn’t disappoint against Malaysia’s Gan Teik Chai-Tan Bin Shen, carving out a 22-20, 21-15 victory in 41 minutes. For Teik Chai-Bin Shen, this was their second first round defeat in a week, as they also suffered the same fate in Kuala Lumpur, where they lost in straight games to Japan’s Naoki Kawamae-Shoji Sato.
Boe-Mogensen will now play either Malaysia’s Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif-Hoon Thien How Hoon or Kawamae-Sato (below) in the second round. Kawamae-Sato
Another top seed to go through to the second round is China’s Wang Xin, who is hoping for better luck in Seoul, after losing in the semi-finals in Kuala Lumpur.
The Chinese ace, who seems jinxed whenever she plays a top ranked team mate, continued her fine record against foreign shuttlers when she easily defeated Indonesia’s Maria Febe Kusumastuti 21-11, 21-13. Her second round opponent could be Malaysia’s Wong Mew Choo, who stretched her to three games before losing in Kuala Lumpur or team mate Liu Xin.
PROTON Malaysia Open losing finalists Wang Yihan, who stopped Wang Xin  in Kuala Lumpur and who is drawn in the same half as her once again, also made it to the second round when she edged Thailand’s Inthanon Ratchanok 21-18, 21-17.
China’s Zhang Nan-Zhao Yunlei, who were also victorious in Taipei, began their campaign with a 21-13, 21-16 victory over Indonesia’s Hendra Setiawan and Russia’s Anastasia Russkikh.
