ONE is Malaysia’s doubles coach Rexy Mainaky’s brother while the other has coached Malaysia before.
And yesterday the coaches – Reony Mainaky and Park Joo-bong, former national coach from South Korea, were the master tacticians behind the success of Japan’s Naoki Kawamae-Shoji Sato, who fought brilliantly to outfox Malaysia’s Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif-Hoon Thien How in the quarter-finals of the Malaysia Open.
With Zakry-Thien How’s 15-21, 19-21 defeat, Malaysia’s challenge in the men’s doubles event was wiped out.
Earlier, two other elite pairs – Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong and Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari-Ong Soon Hock – lost in the first and second rounds respectively.
Zakry gave the Japanese due credit for being very tricky.
“They were fast in their counter attacks and were really tricky.
“We were caught off guard with their well calculated moves,” said Zakry.
“Shoji was a singles player but he has been doing well in the doubles for the last two years. Today, we did try to break their momentum but we were not very consistent with our attacking game.”
Said Thien How: “We are well aware of our weaknesses but it has not dampened our confidence. We will try our best to establish ourselves as a solid pair.”
Naoki-Shoji will take on Denmark’s Jonas Rasmussen-Mads-Conrad Petersen in the semi-final today.
Rasmussen and Petersen are banking on the “home support” to boost their chances of making their first Super Series final.
“This is my first trip to Malaysia and the support from the Malaysian crowd was fantastic (during their 21-16, 21-19 win over Indonesia’s Alven Yulianto-Hendra Gunawan yesterday),” he said.
“It is great to play here and I hope that I will be able to make the final with my great old partner,” added the 23-year-old Conrad, referring to his partner, who is 10 years older than him.
