A 10-DAY national camp may be the right tonic for Japan’s Kenichi Tago to create a stir in the world of badminton once again.
Tago sunk into oblivion after shooting into the limelight by becoming the first Japanese to reach the final of the All-England in March last year. He lost to Lee Chong Wei in the final.
Coach Keita Masuda believed that their young star was ready to make his move once again, starting with the Malaysia Open.
“He is in better condition than before after attending the training camp in Tokyo prior to coming here. More important, he is showing greater determination,” said Masuda.
“His achievement in the All-England was unbelievable and the pressure to live up to expectations got to him. But he is better now.”
Tago has a first-round match against Bao Chunlai of China tomorrow. Ironically, the last time Tago defeated the Chinese was in the semi-finals of the All-England.
“He can go far here if he beats Chunlai,” said Masuda of Tago, who is in the same half of the draw with second seed Taufik Hidayat of Indonesia and South Korean Park Sung-hwan.
“Besides Chunlai, his other goals this year are to beat a few other top players, including Lin Dan and Chen Jin, , Chong Wei and Taufik.”
On Japan’s overall goal this year, Masuda said: “We have a few new singles players in the squad. We have not made any changes in the doubles.
“We hope our players will make the semi-finals in the Super Series event on a regular basis but our main goal is to do well in the world championships (in London in August).”
