Pros provide healthy competition for national shuttlers, says Taufik

HEALTHY rivalry between the national shuttlers and professionals are good for the sport.
Indonesia’s Taufik Hidayat, who left All-Indonesia Badminton Association (PBSI) three years ago, said that he would continue to apply pressure on the national body to prove his point.
“I think this is a healthy way to promote the sport. It will keep both parties on their toes,” said Taufik.
“I am still the best in my country. If I can maintain this for another two years, it shows that something is seriously wrong with the association.
“I hope the challenge from the professionals is taken in good spirit.
“After all, whether it is a pro or a national player, the glory goes to the country.” Taufik currently spars with several youngsters, including Alamsyah Yunus, who knocked out Thailand’s more experienced shuttler Boonsak Ponsana in the second round on Thursday.
“Hopefully, when I eventually drop down the rankings, the youngsters who spar with me will be able to take over.”
When asked on what advice he had for Malaysia’s Mohd Hafiz Hashim on the latter’s wish to seek fresh fortunes as an independent player, Taufik said: “Just remember that it is not an easy journey.
“One has to be literally independent. We have to find money through sponsors for ourselves and also for our coaches. Self-motivation is so important. It is hard work but it is rewarding,” added Taufik.
