ZZ Top again, as China win three titles

China ended the VICTOR BWF Super Series Finals 2010 in Chinese Taipei on Sunday with three titles after winning the women’s singles, doubles and mixed doubles crowns.

Zhang Nan-Zhao Yunlei, who have come to dominate the mixed doubles competitions in recent times, was hardly troubled as they bean finals day with a straight forward 21-17, 21-12 over an overmatched Sudket Prapakamol-Saralee Thoungthongkam.

The Thai pair, who were seeded second, had no answer to the pair many are not calling ZZ Top for their domination of the mixed doubles category.

Remarkably, both Zhang Nan and Zhao Yunlei are also actively involved in the men’s and women’s doubles with Zhao Yunlei reaching the women’s final here with Cheng Shu but Zhang Nan and Chai Biao lost out in the men’s doubles semi-finals to South Korea’s Lee Yong Dae-Jung Jae Sung.

In the women’s singles, rising Chinese superstar Wang Shixian proved too strong for South Korea’s Bae Youn Joo. The duo had met in a Group A match on Friday which the Chinese world No. 2 won in straight games.

She repeated the feat on Sunday as a visibly tired Youn Joo, who slogged for 62 minutes before beating China’s Wang Yihan in the semi-final, succumbed to a 21-13, 21-15 defeat.

Zhao Yunlei’s bid for a double in the VICTOR BWF Super Series Finals 2010 was ended by team mates Wang Xiaoli-Yu Yang in the women’s doubles.

After bagging the mixed doubles title with Zhang Nan, Zhao Yunlei found playing her 10^th match in five days a road too far and fell 21-7, 21-17.

Incredibly, Zhao Yunlei, Yu Yang and Wang Shixian as well as Malaysia’s Lee Chong Wei matched their 2010 feat of winning the first tournament of the year – although technically, the VICTOR BWF Super Series 2010 is the last event of a hectic 2010 season.
