Zakry-Hoon in last eight, eye spot in world meet

Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif-Hoon Thien How reached the quarter-finals of the Malaysia Open and took a step forward in their bid to qualify for the world championships.
They defeated qualifiers Hendri Kurniawan Saputra-Chayut Triyachart of Singapore 21-16, 21-15 in the second round yesterday.
In their first appearance in the last eight of a BWF World Super Series event today, they will take on Japanese Naoki Kawamae-Shoji Sato, who ended the gallant run of China’s Hong Wei-Shen Ye with a 21-16, 21-16 win.
Just a day ago, the Chinese youngsters eliminated top seeds and defending champions Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong.
Zakry, who formed a partnership with Thien How last year, was happy that they broke the barrier on home ground.

“Thien How and I have lost in the early rounds in our last four Super Series events.
“We finally got over it and this is certainly a good start for us,” he said. “We are serious in our attempt to qualify for the world championships and we have to perform consistently well.”
The qualifying period for the world championships in London in August ends in May and Zakry-Thien How, who are now ranked at No. 87, need outstanding results to make it. A country can have a maximum of three pairs if all are among the top 24.
Zakry-Thien How are the only Malaysian men’s pair left in contention in the Malaysia Open. Compatriots Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari-Ong Soon Hock were beaten 11-21, 20-22 by China’s scratch pair Chai Biao-Guo Zhengdong yesterday.
Malaysia no longer have an interest in the women’s singles and doubles events.
Wong Mew Choo failed to notch a first win over Wang Xin of China, the top seed, losing 16-21, 21-17, 9-21 in the second round.
“This is the first time that I have taken one game off her,” said Mew Choo.
“But I am disappointed that I could not keep the momentum going in the decider.
“This is the best fight that I have given her and it showed that I can catch up if I continue to work hard.”
In the women’s doubles, both elite pairs – Marylen Ng Paou Leng-Woon Khe Wei and Vivian Hoo-Lim Yin Loo – failed to clear their second-round hurdles.
