“It was a delight to see his strong determination to win the first title this year for Malaysia. More will come if he keeps this spirit going.”
Misbun, who resigned as a national coach on Dec 31, was commenting on Chong Wei’s sensational hat-trick of titles in the Super Series Masters Finals in Taipei yesterday.
The Malaysian, who also won the 2008 and 2009 edition of the Finals, defeated Peter Gade-Christensen of Denmark in straight games in the final.
Misbun added that he was proud of Chong Wei’s achievement.
“He looked very comfortable, calm and very focused in the task. His game was very stable and everything came so natural to him,” he said.
“All his hard work and sacrifices over the years are showing. And I hope he will continue to progress from here.”
On Chong Wei’s future as a player, Misbun said: “He raised the level of his game from the 2004 Athens Olympics to win a silver at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
“He is on another Olympic cycle and I am happy that he has managed to maintain the high quality in his game.
“He has one year more to raise his game even higher for the 2012 London Olympics and I am confident that he is on the right track.”
When the question was shifted to his recent resignation from the BAM, the excitement disappeared from his voice.
“I am still very much hurt. I am not in the right frame of mind to speak up openly about my decision to leave,” he said.
“I need a some time to look into things again.”
Misbun had a scheduled meeting with the Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek and Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) president Datuk Seri Nadzmi Mohd Salleh at an undisclosed venue last night.
