Denmark’s Jonas Rasmussen-Mads Condrads-Petersen continued their amazing run in the VICTOR Korea Open Superseries Premier when they defeated world champions Cai Yun-Fu Haifeng to reach the quarter-finals on Thursday.
Jonas-Mads celebrate beating Cai-FuThe unseeded pair (left), who reached last Sunday’s PROTON Malaysia Open Superseries final, took 54 minutes to defeat the fifth seeds 21-18, 17-21, 21-13 to set-up an intriguing match-up with compatriots and top seeds Mathias Boe-Carsten Mogensen.
Boe-Mogensen reached the last eight by beating Japan’s Naoki Kawamae-Shoji Sato 21-10, 21-10 and will now have a chance to avenge their shock Copenhagen Masters final loss to their team mates last month
South Korean qualifiers Kim Ki Jung-Kim Sa Rang created a big upset when they turned on the style to oust Asian Games champions Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan 21-18, 21-18 and will now meet sixth seeded compatriots Jung Jae Sung-Lee Yong Dae for a place in the semi-finals.

Mission accomplished – for Danish pair but not for Malaysians

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia’s Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif-Hoon Thien How and Danes Mads Conrad-Petersen-Jonas Rasmussen came into the US$1.2mil South Korea Open in Seoul yesterday with the same mission – to settle a score.
But only one accomplished their mission.
While Zakry-Thien How failed to get the better of Naoki Kawamae-Shoji Sato of Japan, the Danish pair managed to exact revenge over China’s Guo Zhengdong-Chai Biao.
The Malaysian and Danish pairs had lost to the Japanese and Chinese pairs in the Malaysia Open last week.
Yesterday, Zakry-Thien How lost 16-21, 20-22 to Naoki-Shoji in the first round.
The Malaysians had a good chance to force deuce after taking a 20-19 lead but allowed the Japanese to claw back for victory.
Conrad-Jonas, however, managed to turn the tables on Zhengdong-Chai Biao with a convincing 21-14, 21-17 win.
On Sunday, they failed to become the first Danish pair to win the Malaysia Open title after losing to the Chinese in the final.
Two Malaysian pairs cleared the first hurdle yesterday.
Second seeds Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong made it to the second round after a sensational 21-11, 21-17 win over South Koreans Cho Gun-woo-Kwon Yi-goo in 26 minutes.
Today, they too will be in revenge mode when they take on China’s Hong Wei-Shen Ye for a place in the quarter-finals.
Kien Keat-Boon Heong lost to the Chinese pair in the opening round of the Malaysia Open.
Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari-Ong Soon Hock survived a scare when they huffed and puffed their way to a 21-13, 20-22, 21-18 win over Germans Ingo Kindervater-Johannes Schoettler.
They will face eighth seeds Alven Yulianto-Hendra Gunawan of Indonesia next.
Zakry-Thien How were not the only Malaysian casualties yesterday. Independent shuttlers Gan Teik Chai-Tan Bin Shen and back-up shuttlers Teo Kok Siang-Goh Wei Shem also fell by the wayside.

Chong Wei struggles in Seoul

LEE Chong Wei dropped a game for the first time in his last three tournaments but safely came through while women's singles Wong Mew Choo scalped another China player en route to the second round of the Korea Open in Seoul yesterday.

Chong Wei made a fiery start, but then allowed Jan Jorgensen of Denmark to dictate terms in the second game but recovered to secure a 21-9, 18-21, 21-16 win in 54 minutes.

Mew Choo, who beat former world champion Lu Lan in last week's Malaysia Open, continued her resurgence toppling China's youngster Liu Xin 21-18, 21-15 in 36 minutes.

Chong Wei, the World No 1, is on course for a hat-trick of titles after winning the World Super Series Masters in Taipei and the Malaysia Open on Sunday without losing a game.

However, Jorgensen almost unseated the Malaysian and Chong Wei will tread cautiously in his next match against either South Korean Park Sung Hwan or Przemyslaw Wacha of Poland today.

Mew Choo has another tough encounter today against top seed Wang Xin of China, who beat Maria Febe Kusumastuti of Inodnesia 21-11, 21-13. Wang Xin eliminated Mew Choo at the same stage last week.

Hafiz Hashim's final tournament under the BA of Malaysia (BAM) banner was something to forget after he lost 21-16, 21-13 to Marc Zwiebler of Germany.

China's World No 5 Lin Dan erased any doubts of his fitness when he secured an easy 21-15, 21-15 win over Tommy Sugiarto of Indonesia. He next plays Zwiebler.

Veteran Wong Choong Hann was also shown the exit in the first round by world champion Chen Jin of China who earned a 21-9, 21-17 win.

In the men's doubles, Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong defeated South Koreans Cho Gun Woo-Kwon Yi Goo 21-11, 21-17.

They will play Shen Ye-Hong Wei of China, who beat Michael Fuchs-Oliver Roth of Germany 21-12, 21-8, today. Shen Ye-Hong Wei upstaged Kien Keat-Boon Heong in the first round of the Malaysia Open.

Fairuzizuan Tazari-Ong Soon Hock cleared the first hurdle, albeit in three games, when they beat Germany's Ingo Kindervater-Johannes Schoettler 21-13, 20-22, 21-18.

Back-up pair Goh Wei Shem-Teo Kok Siang crashed 21-13, 21-18 to China's Liu Xiaolong-Qiu Zihan while professional pair Gan Teik Chai-Tan Bin Shen lost 22-20, 21-15 to World No 1 Mathias Boe-Carsten Mogensen of Denmark.

Zakry Latif-Hoon Thien How, who lost to Japan's Naoki Kawamae-Shoji Sato in the Malaysia Open, fell again to a 21-16, 22-20 defeat.

Denmark's Mads Condrads Petersen-Jona Rasmussen lived up to their promise when they downed Malaysia Open champions Guo Zhendong-Chai Biao of China 21-14, 21-17. Petersen-Rasmussen were beaten by the China pair on Sunday.

Winning return for Denmark’s World No. 1s

Denmark’s Mathias Boe-Carsten Mogensen make a winning return to the badminton world after a two-week break when they won their opening match at the VICTOR Korea Open Superseries Premier, the opening event of the new OSIM BWF World Superseries Premier calendar.
The world No. 1 men’s doubles pair, who had a successful outing in Chinese Taipei earlier this month when they captured their first ever VICTOR BWF Super Series Finals season-ending title, skipped the PROTON Malaysia Open Superseries last week to get ready for Korea, which is offering the richest prize money in badminton history – US$1.2 million.
It was a calculated move by the Danes, who opted out of the hot and humid PROTON Malaysia Open for the cool, cold, icy weather of Seoul as participation in the OSIM BWF World Superseries Premier tournaments is compulsory for the top ranked players.
And they didn’t disappoint against Malaysia’s Gan Teik Chai-Tan Bin Shen, carving out a 22-20, 21-15 victory in 41 minutes. For Teik Chai-Bin Shen, this was their second first round defeat in a week, as they also suffered the same fate in Kuala Lumpur, where they lost in straight games to Japan’s Naoki Kawamae-Shoji Sato.
Boe-Mogensen will now play either Malaysia’s Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif-Hoon Thien How Hoon or Kawamae-Sato (below) in the second round. Kawamae-Sato
Another top seed to go through to the second round is China’s Wang Xin, who is hoping for better luck in Seoul, after losing in the semi-finals in Kuala Lumpur.
The Chinese ace, who seems jinxed whenever she plays a top ranked team mate, continued her fine record against foreign shuttlers when she easily defeated Indonesia’s Maria Febe Kusumastuti 21-11, 21-13. Her second round opponent could be Malaysia’s Wong Mew Choo, who stretched her to three games before losing in Kuala Lumpur or team mate Liu Xin.
PROTON Malaysia Open losing finalists Wang Yihan, who stopped Wang Xin  in Kuala Lumpur and who is drawn in the same half as her once again, also made it to the second round when she edged Thailand’s Inthanon Ratchanok 21-18, 21-17.
China’s Zhang Nan-Zhao Yunlei, who were also victorious in Taipei, began their campaign with a 21-13, 21-16 victory over Indonesia’s Hendra Setiawan and Russia’s Anastasia Russkikh.

Saina and Fischer-Neilsen breeze through while South Korean duo maintain good form

India’s Saina Nehwal and Denmark’s Joachim Fischer-Nielsen showed no signs of injuries which have bugged them in recent times to reach the second round of the VICTOR Korea Open Superseries Premier in Seoul on Wednesday. Joining them in the second round are South Korean sensations Eom Hye Won-Kim Ha Na.
Saina, winner of three Superseries events last year and five titles in all, skipped the VICTOR BWF Super Series Finals in Chinese Taipei earlier this month and also last week’s PROTON Malaysia Open Superseries, the opening event of the 2011 OSIM BWF World Superseries with an ankle injury
Up against Chinese Taipei’s Tai Tzu Ying, who she beat in last year’s Singapore Open, Saina was pushed to the limit and was lucky to survive a three-game encounter which could have gone either way. In the end, Saina's experience was the difference as the former world No. 2 overcame a first game deficit to score a 19-21, 21-14, 22-20 victory in 49 minutes.
Fischer-Nielsen and his partner Christinna Pedersen were losing semi-finalists in the PROTON Malaysia Open mixed doubles competition after the former suffered aggravated an old knee injury which prevented them from completing their match against eventually champions He Hanbin-Ma Jin of China.
This time, the Danes were looking fit as fiddles but it was their Singapore opponents Chayut Triyachart-Vanessa Neo Yu Yan who had to retire in the match with Fischer-Nielsen and Pedersen winning 21-9, 11-3.
Eom-KimMeanwhile, in the women’s doubles, up and coming South Korean pair Hye Won-Ha Na (left), followed up their heroics from the PROTON Malaysia Open where they reached the second round after beating the more experienced Indonesian pair of Vita Marissa-Nadya Melati.
In Seoul, they once against beat an Indonesian pair, this time Meiliana Jauhari-Greysia Polii were their victims as the young Koreans won 21-14, 21-16 to set up a rematch with world No. 1s Cheng Wen Hsing-Chien Yu Chin of Chinese Taipei, the pair who ended their run in Kuala Lumpur last week.
Meanwhile, Denmark’s veteran and young combination of Jonas Rasmussen-Mads Conrads-Petersen lived up to their word as they defeated China’s Guo Zhendong-Chai Biao in the opening round.
On Sunday, it was the Chinese duo who got the better of their Danish counterparts in the final of the PROTON Malaysia Open Superseries in straight games but in Seoul, it was the Danes who got the upper hand, winning 21-14, 21-17.

Chong Wei survives Jorgensen test

PROTON Malaysia Open Superseries champions Lee Chong Wei and Wang Shixian reached the second round of the VICTOR Korea Open Superseries Premier in contrasting styles in Seoul on Wednesday.
Chen JinWhile China’s superstar Wang Shixian had it easy against Thailand’s Salajit Ponsana, Malaysia’s world No. 1 Chong Wei was given a tough fight by Denmark’s Jan o Jorgensen, who became the first player this year to take a game off Chong Wei.
Wang Shixian, who like Chong Wei is chasing a third consecutive title in January – they both won the VICTOR BWF Super Series Finals and PROTON Malaysia Open – thrashed Salajit 21-16, 21-11 to set up a second round encounter with Japan Ai Goto
Goto reached the second round by beating Chinese Taipei qualifier Pai Hsiao Ma 21-14, 23-21. Also reaching the second round is Denmark's Tine Baun (right).  Tine Rasmussen
Chong Wei, meanwhile, had to dig deep as the ever dangerous O Jorgensen, who won his first ever Superseries title when he took the Danish Open in on Nov 1, showed he has the potential to go toe-to-toe with the best in the business.
Chonbg Wei, the defending champion, was in his element in the opening game when he ran O Jorgensen ragged to chalk up an easy 21-9 win. But it was a different story in the second game as the 23-year-old Dane matched Chong Wei stroke for stroke and levelled the match with a 21-18 win.
Stung by the loss of his first game this year, Chong Wei, the Olympic silver medallist tried every trick in his book in the decider and eventually won 21-16 and he will now meet South Korea’s Park
Joining Chong Wei in the second round are former Korea Open champion Peter Gade of Denmark and Indonesia’s former world and Olympic champion Taufik Hidayat and China’s reigning world champion Chen Jin (above) and three-time world champion Lin Dan.
In the men’s doubles, former world No. 1s Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong of Malaysia made up for their stunning first round upset in Kuala Lumpur a week ago by beating South Korea’s Cho Gun Woo-Kwon Yi Goo 21-11, 21-17.
They will now play Chinese qualifiers Hong Wei-Shen Ye who defeated Germany’s Michael Fuchs-Oliver Roth 21-12, 21-8.

KOREA OPEN – Top seeds withdraw

Mixed doubles top seeds Thomas Laybourn / Kamilla Rytter Juhl of Denmark will not start the Korea Open Premier Super Series.  The Danes, who were forced to withdraw after playing their first match at the Super Series Finals earlier this month, were removed from the draw before the start of play tomorrow.  They have been replaced by Chau/Wong of Hong Kong.
They are not the only Europeans to drop out as Adcock/Bankier also withdrew, creating a first round all-Taiwan battle between Lee/Chien and Fang/Wang, who were promoted from qualifying.
The other high profile withdrawal was another expected one as Singapore Open champion Sony Dwi Kuncoro has once again found he is not match-ready.
